An Evening with Steep Canyon Rangers; The Not So Gala, Gala

News

Join us for the second annual Not So Gala, Gala on Friday, March 8, 2024. This year’s event features live music from Steep Canyon Rangers. Early access begins at 5:00 p.m., and general admission entry is at 7:00 p.m. General Admission tickets are $75, and VIP tickets are $150, which include early entry and heavy hors d’oeuvres.

This laid-back event takes place at Beech Mountain Brewing Company, with a casual dress code. The Not So Gala, Gala also features a live auction from the High Country’s own Jesse Miller.

The award portion of the evening is a special highlight, recognizing someone with ties to colon cancer – a survivor, healthcare worker, or volunteer – who exhibits strength, compassion, and a commitment to the community. Named for Kelly-Grier Costin, a Beech Mountain Resort family member who passed away on March 19, 2021, after a spirited three-year battle with colon cancer, the KG’s Ripple Effect Award ceremony is an integral part of the event. You can nominate a recipient HERE!

Highlights of the overall event include a live auction with the High Country’s favorite auctioneer, Jesse Miller. All proceeds benefit the Colon Cancer Coalition, supporting screenings and assisting families in need.

The following day, Runs for Buns hits the slopes as skiers and snowboarders make as many runs as possible to raise funds for the cause. Similar to a walk-a-thon or charity run, individuals and teams garner support from family and friends who pledge donations for every ski run completed that day. Non-skiers can participate by signing up, creating a fundraising team, and seeking donations. A full 100% of donations and registration fees go directly to the Colon Cancer Coalition.

The odds of surviving colon cancer significantly increase with early detection and treatment. However, assistance is needed to boost screening rates, as only 40% of colon cancers are found in the early stages. Last year’s event was an incredible turnout, and this year’s features include a photo booth. The VIP reception also boasts a live music element.

The Steep Canyon Rangers are made up of Graham Sharp on banjo and vocals, Mike Guggino on mandolin/mandola and vocals, Nicky Sanders on fiddle and vocals, Mike Ashworth on drums and vocals, Barrett Smith on bass, guitar, and vocals, and Aaron Burdett on guitar and vocals. Steep Canyon Rangers have been on a journey that is uniquely their own. The band started in college at UNC-Chapel Hill, then dove head first into bluegrass in its most traditional form, and over the years have risen to the top of the bluegrass genre headlining top festivals such as Merlefest and Grey Fox Bluegrass. Only to then be discovered by Steve Martin, a famous actor, and banjo player. Martin has taken the Rangers on over a decade-long tour introducing them to hundreds of thousands of new fans and giving them prime-time TV exposure. This has helped SCR become the most recognizable modern name in bluegrass music. The band has continued to tour extensively on their own, without Martin, and has expanded their genre into country, jam, and Americana. The Rangers are big players in the bluegrass/country and Americana scene today. They are often compared to predecessors The Band, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and the modern Zac Brown Band.
