Winterfest 2014

January 11th and 12th, 2014 is Winterfest Weekend! In cooperation with the town of Beech Mountain, a number of events will be presented throughout the weekend by Beech Mountain Resort.

The Grand Opening of the Beech Mountain Brewery will take place in the village of Beech Mountain Resort along with free samples of their signature ales on Saturday. Annual Winterfest events include the Winterfest Rail Jam on Saturday. Registration will take place in Roots Ride Shop from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m with the contest beginning at noon. Cost is $15 to enter along with a $30 discounted lift ticket with entry.

Also on Saturday, the Triangle Figure Skating Club from Wake Forest, N.C. will provide exhibitions at the 7000 square foot outdoor ice skating rink. General skating lessons will also be available to resort guests. Live bands will also provide entertainment throughout the day at the Beech Tree Bar & Grill.

Scheduled for Saturday afternoon from 1-4 p.m. is the Dr. Bacon band from the local Boone area. This new band’s genre features Appalachian Soul-Grass which plays a danceable blend of energetic acoustic-driven rock and roll, bluegrass, soul, funk, blues, folk, hiphop and more!

Evening headliner features If Birds Could Fly, an Appalachian folk band who brings a new take on Appalachian folk and classic Americana. They hail from Southwest Virginia and bring their roots of old country, ghostly melodies to a new and refreshing stage with a blend of many different genres. From Folk to Indie, If Birds Could Fly is a band for people that like real country music and there is something everyone can enjoy.

Events for Sunday, January 12th include the annual Cardboard Box Derby Visual Competition and Race. The $25 entry fee and registration is from 9-11 a.m. in the Group Sales Department. Beginning at 12 noon, the Visual Judging and Inspection part of the competition will take place beside the ice rink. Race time starts on Freestyle at 2 pm. Awards will be given for “Best Looking”, “Most Original”, and “Fastest.”
